Alexandre Lacazette will wear the number nine shirt for Arsenal next season after the Gunners confirmed the latest squad numbers for players.
Lacazette wore 10 at Lyon but that number is currently held by Jack Wilshere, despite ongoing uncertainty over his future at the club, but the new club-record signing has taken the shirt worn last season by Lucas Perez, which almost certainly confirms the Spaniard’s exit.
Lucas has made clear his desire to leave the club this summer, with former club Deportivo one possible destination while fellow La Liga side Sevilla and Turkish outfit Fenerbahce have also shown an interest.
Details of Lacazette’s new number have emerged on the club’s official online store, with the French striker confirmed as the 10th player to wear the shirt in the Premier League era following on from the likes of Paul Merson, Nicolas Anelka, Jose Antonio Reyes and Lukas Podolski.
Wilshere was not listed on the players fans can choose to have on the back of their replica kits, though none of last season’s other loanees featured.
Lucas’ squad number change to 28 was also revealed on the website though that may only be temporary as he attempts to sort a transfer.
Arsenal fans could get their first glimpse of Lacazette and fellow new signing Sead Kolasinac in action on Thursday when the Gunners face Sydney FC and manager Arsene Wenger spoke about both players at a press conference earlier today after landing in Australia.
“We play football based on movement – I believe both can integrate well into the team,” he said.
“One is a defender who can play on the flank, the other of course is striker with a great goalscoring record.
